During the Winter Haven Christmas Parade, the off-duty Polk County medic noticed something amiss on a float.

Instinct and actions of an off-duty Polk County firefighter will allow a family to enjoy their Christmas.

During the annual Winter Haven Christmas Parade, Engineer/Medic Dustin Bovill saw something amiss on a float.

"A bunch of adults were huddled up in a corner. It is not normal when you see a bunch of adults getting to make a game plan," he told a reporter with Fox 13

He jumped onto the float, grabbed a one-year-old and hit her on the back several times which forced something to pop out of her mouth. With the obstruction gone, she started breathing again.

Kerstin Brower recalled the frightening moments she saw Elena slipping away.  "It was just a matter of time after closing her eyes that she was going to give up."

Elena and her family went to see and thank Bovill at Polk County Fire Station 21 in South Lake Wales.

"Dustin you mean so much," said Kerstin as she choked up and hugged him.

Bovill gave Elena a stuffed unicorn and her older brother, a fire truck. The Browers presented him a plaque that reads: "Not All Heroes Wear Capes."
